New disciplinary strategy

The Royal Charter puts the public interest at the heart of ICAS, and nowhere is this more important than in our disciplinary and appeal functions. ICAS’ Discipline Board has published its strategy for 2024/25, ensuring we have a just and robust system in place.

Upholding trust in ICAS and the accountancy profession demands strong, independent and effective tribunals, acting fairly in the interests of all parties. With so much changing inside and outside ICAS, the Discipline Board has devised and published a new strategy to explain the work it will undertake over the next two years to ensure that the robustness of ICAS’ disciplinary processes is maintained, and improved where possible.

This strategy was approved by the Discipline Board on 15 February 2024 and feeds into the wider strategy, ICAS 2030: Together, we will…, set by the ICAS Council.

The Discipline Board is appointed by the ICAS Council to oversee the tribunal processes, and is responsible for formulating and delivering the objectives of ICAS in respect of our disciplinary processes.

An evening in Dubai

The UAE area network met in February for an evening of insightful conversation and networking featuring Paul Gyles, Group CFO of Shamal Holding. Gyles has enjoyed an impressive career in finance, spanning several decades, and was recently listed as one of the top 20 CFOs in the NAFA Middle East Power List.

The evening, hosted by ICAS Council member Suzy Kerton CA, began in the Shamal Holding office at Dubai Harbour with an engaging discussion of Gyles’s time in finance, before moving to L’Amo Bistro del Mare for drinks, canapés and a chance to network with new connections.

Matthew Cregan CA

Project Consultant, Deloitte Canada

What attracted you to your current role?
I am working in audit transformation at Deloitte Toronto, developing a next-gen audit platform. After finishing my training contract in audit, this job has given me the opportunity to expand my skillset beyond traditional accounting practices, including gaining proficiency in machine learning and software development. It allows me to contribute to innovation in audit, which has been intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding.

Which part of your ICAS training has helped you most?
I am leveraging all the knowledge gained from my ICAS studies, as my role requires the technical skills of the accounting standards, an understanding of ethical considerations and the professional competence to apply it all.

What do you hope to achieve over the next year or so?
I’m currently working towards the next major release in the audit platform, to go out in the summer. Having developed new tools and methodologies improving the efficiency, accuracy and effectiveness of audits, my goal is to see it go live and create a positive impact for users. And, of course, I’ll be using Toronto as a stepping-stone to travel and explore more of North America.

How did you come to make the move in your career from the UK to Canada?
I told my career coach I was interested in opportunities to move abroad. I then found out about this specific opportunity to work on developing Deloitte’s next-gen audit platform from the Toronto office and was excited about it from the get-go. The application, interview and job offer all happened very quickly and I made the move last February.

What advice would you give fellow CAs thinking of moving abroad?
Go! Gaining experience abroad is a great way to expand your horizons and advance your careers. When you get there, make the most of the local network of CAs – it can provide valuable insights, as well as opportunities for job openings or partnerships. And it’s a great way to make friends.

I really felt the benefits of moving abroad within my company – it made the logistics a lot easier, and I had a job to walk into when I arrived.
