Forensic accountancy

Ever fancied yourself as a financial Poirot or the next Rebus? Operating in a unique and exciting profession, forensic accountants are the detectives of the accountancy world, working to uncover the story the numbers are trying to hide. They protect assets, ensure financial transparency and help preserve integrity within the organisations in which they work.

As with all good detectives, forensic accountants possess a unique set of characteristics: attention to detail, strong analytical skills and effective communications skills, to name a few. You must be able to absorb and adapt quickly to developing information: the smallest of discrepancies in financial records could be the key to uncovering a crime. Finally, you must possess high ethical standards and personal integrity to maintain your professional credibility.

If this sounds like something that might be of interest, there are several routes you might take to pursue this line. The most common is to complete your accountancy qualifications, such as with ICAS, and then go on to specialise. Once specialised, many forensic accountants pursue further relevant credentials enabling them to become experts in their field. In Scotland, there are a handful of firms with specialist, full-time forensic accountants. But with the current media interest in the role, and rapidly developing technology having implications for business practices, we expect more opportunities to arise in the Scottish market.
