In memoriam

Peter Ferguson CA

21 February 1947 – 8 June 2024 

Peter Nichol Ferguson (M10331) passed away peacefully at St Vincent’s Hospice, Howwood after a lengthy illness, bravely borne.

After education at Paisley Grammar School, Peter trained with David Strathie CA (later Kerr, MacLeod and MacFarlan) in Glasgow, qualifying in 1971. He worked for several years with James Templeton & Co and Slater, Hogg & Howison in Glasgow, and was Company Secretary at Howie of Dunlop.

Peter was a keen golfer, captaining Ranfurly Castle Golf Club in Bridge of Weir. He was also a lifelong St Mirren supporter, an enthusiastic curler and a keen follower of the folk music scene.

Peter is survived by his wife, Jane Neal, his son, Christopher (by an earlier marriage), his three grandchildren, to whom he was devoted, and his brother William. He received his Gold Club membership in 2021.

Alexander McKenzie CA

29 August 1954 – 17 April 2024

Alexander McKenzie (M13160) passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home in Edinburgh in April. 

Following a post-graduate diploma in accounting at Heriot Watt, Sandy joined Deloitte in Edinburgh’s Charlotte Square in 1977, qualifying in 1980. He later moved to Aberdeen to work for Arthur Young, McLelland, Moores before joining Britoil in Glasgow in 1984, then Cairn Energy in Edinburgh in 1986, where he remained as a key member of the finance department until his retirement in 2015. A specialist in joint venture audits, Sandy was well respected by his many friends and colleagues in the industry for his wealth of knowledge and keen sense of humour. He will be much missed by all.

Thomas Duncan CA

4 August 1945 – 5 May 2024

Thomas Howat Duncan (M09486) died peacefully on 5 May 2024. He trained with Turner, Hutton & Lawson in Glasgow and qualified in 1968. His final job was with McCall Brothers.

Originally from Kilmarnock, he was living in Mauchline, Ayrshire at the time of his death. He received Gold Club membership in 2018, proudly attending the lunch with his daughter Anne, who is also an ICAS member.

He is survived by his wife Joyce, his four children and five grandchildren.

Adam Michael Gordon Turnbull (M07399) has died aged 82. He trained with Andrew J Dobbie & Co, qualifying in 1960. His final job was with Hawker Siddeley Canada and he was living in Mississauga, Ontario at his time of death. He received Gold Club membership in 2010.

Archibald Smith (M09986) has died aged 85. He trained with William Duncan & Co, qualifying in 1969. He was retired and living in Guildford at his time of death. He received Gold Club membership in 2019.

Professor Brian James Boswell Galvin (M05602) has died aged 97. He trained with Parker, Vicary, Russell & Co, qualifying in 1953. His final job was with the University of Toronto and he was living in Kitchener, Ontario at his time of death. He received Gold Club membership in 2003.

Donald Maxwell Macdonald (M09033) has died aged 84. He trained with Brown, Fleming & Murray, qualifying in 1966. His final job was with Pollok & Corrour and he was living in London at his time of death. He received Gold Club membership in 2016.

Iain Fotheringham Greenock (M10558) has died aged 75. He trained with S Eastem, Simmers & Co CA, qualifying in 1972. His final job was with AG Barr and he was living in Strathaven at his time of death. He received Gold Club membership in 2022.

Professor Irvine MacLaren Lapsley (M11174) has died aged 74. He trained with Robertson & Maxton Graham, qualifying in 1974. His final job was with the University of Edinburgh and he was living in the city at his time of death.
