Shaping the Profession

What does the UK public expect from accountants — and how does that compare with the views of CAs? Join us as we explore the views from ICAS members and a diverse cross-section of UK society to discover how these expectations are reshaping the future of accountancy.

The event, hosted by Head of Research, Marie Gardner CA, is a great opportunity to explore how the accountancy profession can evolve to serve the public interest. Also on the panel will be James Baird CA, Chair of the Shaping the Profession steering group and formerly Managing Partner at Deloitte, and Fran van Dijk, CEO of One Stone Advisors and ICAS Council member.

There will be a live Q&A – giving members the chance to ask questions, challenge assumptions and share perspectives on the path forward.

Date: 17 June 2025
Time: 14.00–15.00 (BST)
Location: Online only
Free to attend

Jake Robinson CA

Senior Associate, EMEIA Financial Services, Insurance, EY

What attracted you to your current role?
I joined EY through the graduate scheme after university, drawn by the learning opportunities audit offers. It’s a fantastic way to understand how different businesses operate financially, while also working towards a CA qualification. Plus the chance to live and work in London was a big bonus.

Which part of your ICAS training has helped most in your career to date?
The breadth and depth of the syllabus – it covers everything from technical accounting treatments to strategic business management. The Excel-based exams, especially in financial reporting and strategic financial management, have been particularly valuable in developing practical financial skills I use daily.

What do you enjoy most about working for your company?
The scale of the organisation means there are so many extracurricular opportunities beyond work – sports, societies and connecting with fellow graduates. The EY graduate scheme has helped me build great relationships with peers at the same life stage, which has been both rewarding and enjoyable. One recent highlight was a tour to Paris with the EY UK rugby team where we played EY France at the Stade Jean-Bouin (home of Stade Français).

What would you say to someone thinking of studying to become a CA?
I’d recommend it. The CA qualification offers invaluable financial insight and education, all supported by your employer. In addition, being part of ICAS connects you to a vast network of professionals, providing access to advice, opportunities and support throughout your career.
