OBITUARIES

In memoriam

William “Bill” White CA

15 November 1932 – 2 March 2024

My father William White (M06536), known to all as Bill, served his CA apprenticeship with Dunlop & Murray in Glasgow. Doing so involved taking a significant pay cut as, since his early teens, he had assisted the local milkman before doing a full day at school!

After qualifying in 1957, followed by national service in the RAF, he joined Esso Petroleum in Hampshire. In 1961, he relocated his expanding young family to Manchester to take up a role with Imperial Chemical Industries. While there, he was recruited into the fledgling computer department, ICI having recognised that an accountant’s logical mind was a good skill match, and he served a couple of years as a programmer. He told us stories of programming a machine larger than a double-decker bus, but less powerful than a late 1990s laptop and particularly prone to overheating.

In late 1968 he decided it was time to return to Glasgow. When the role that he relocated for didn’t work out as planned, he moved to British Steel in Ravenscraig. The family were soon on the move again when he was relocated to Teesside, later becoming the Head of Internal Audit. He remained with the company for over 20 years, before taking early retirement in a reshuffle.

His third part-time job after leaving British Steel was with Cleveland county council, where he was promptly persuaded to return to work full-time. As Head of European Social Fund Grants, he worked not only with the council, but also with every company and charity eligible to apply for funding in the area. When the council was abolished in the local government reorganisation of 1996, he continued working as a consultant to the four constituent boroughs on their ESF grants. He didn’t fully retire until 2007, as he approached his 75th birthday. He qualified for Gold Club membership in 2007, although it was a few years before he was able to travel from his home in Harrogate to attend a lunch and receive his award.

A keen golfer, my father was also active in his church and with a number of local charities, as well as serving for many years as a magistrate. The accountancy gene was obviously strong, as two of his five children also became chartered accountants – one with ICAS, one with the “almost as good” ICAEW – while the others work in insurance, banking and financial software sales.

Michael Anderson CA

6 April 1947 – 23 January 2024

David Michael Geoffrey Anderson (M10767) passed away peacefully at the Borders General Hospital, Melrose in January following a period in hospital. After education at Clifton Hall and then Loretto he went on to work at both Winnie Murray and JM Geoghan and Co in Edinburgh for many happy years. He continued to support Loretto after he left as Editor of the Lorettonian Magazine from 1975 to 1985.

He passed his love of tennis, golf and rugby on to the family and was a keen supporter on the touchline for many years. His enjoyment of music and supporting the Highland Cattle Society kept him busy during his retirement in the Borders. He leaves behind his wife, Gillian, and his two children, Andrew and Karen.
