OBITUARIES

In memoriam

Alastair Beattie CA

30 March 1932 – 19 November 2023

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Alastair Clark Beattie CA (M06545), who was born in Dumfries on 30 March 1932.

He was educated at Dumfries Academy. He began his accountancy training with Carson & Trotter in Dumfries and completed it in Glasgow with Wylie & Bisset, where he worked for more than five years. His career was briefly interrupted by national service with the RAF. He then joined the Scottish Development Agency as an accountant before establishing his own successful practice in the early 1970s. Despite a serious stroke in 1982, which forced him to retire from full-time work, he continued to serve a few loyal audit clients.

Alastair was a passionate fan of the Herald crossword and enjoyed holidays in France. He was a keen golfer, a member of Ralston Golf Club in Paisley, and later took up bowling at Hawkhead Bowling Club, also in Paisley, as part of his recovery.

Alastair’s life was marked by his commitment to his work, his love for his family, and his enjoyment of leisure activities. He spent most of his adult life in Paisley before moving to McKellar House at Erskine Home, Bishopton, in March 2019. He passed away peacefully on 19 November 2023 after a short illness. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Alastair was married to Elsie Beattie, who sadly passed away in 1998. He is survived by his one son, John.

This is a personal submission from his family

James “Jim” McLeod CA

18 June 1935 – 23 October 2024

Jim McLeod CA (M07494) was born on 18 June 1935, the only son of John and Mary McLeod.

He was brought up in Kilnside Road, Paisley before the family moved to Neilston Road. He attended Saint Catherine’s Annexe and St Mirin’s Academy, proving himself to be highly intelligent. Jim had a happy childhood, spending a lot of time with his Cunningham and McLeod cousins.

When his dad asked him what he might choose as a career, Jim suggested he would follow his father into the merchant navy. However, his dad thought Jim was not cut out to be a sailor and that his talents lay elsewhere. So he arranged a couple of sea voyages for him. The result: Jim became a CA.

In those days, one matriculated at Glasgow University and attended the Institute of Chartered Accountants in the evening. Jim was apprenticed to a small firm, Henderson’s, in Glasgow, where he had a good balance of accounts with Coca-Cola, Courtaulds and Cadbury, as well as clients in the east end of Glasgow, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He successfully graduated from Glasgow University as a CA, to the great pride of his parents to whom he was devoted.

In his youth, Jim had a group of close friends, male and female, with whom he socialised, going on holiday around Britain and the Isle of Man. In his career, he moved to a larger firm of accountants, then to Renfrewshire council and finally as Chief Internal Auditor with Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive, where his analytical skills were well used.

For 20 years, his work took him away from home to London, Campbeltown and the Outer Hebrides. He enjoyed coming home and, after work, meeting friends with whom he enjoyed a black rum or a whisky. Jim was great company, a storyteller with a terrific sense of humour.

He lived a full life, with interests including golf, reading, daily crosswords and listening to music. Jim had a long interest in both world wars. He was a lifelong member of the British Legion, where he served as treasurer for 40 years. He was also the auditor for the Knights of St Columba. His service was recognised with the award of the KSC service medal.

Twenty-three years ago, Jim decided to move to an apartment. In later years, he experienced some health issues, developing a heart condition, then cancer. He remained stoic and determinedly independent. It became very important to him that people knew that, in his 89 years, he led a busy, charitable, fulfilling life, lived very much on his own terms.

The immediate response of people to Jim’s death is that he was a lovely and highly principled man, quietly generous to those he cared for and not afraid to challenge injustice.

We are honoured to have had him as a cousin, a trusted adviser and a friend. He will be much missed.
