As Director of Public Affairs at ICAS it’s part of my job to make sure ICAS has a strong voice in both Holyrood and Westminster. And if there is one subject that is guaranteed to spark debate among MPs, MSPs and policymakers, it’s tax.
More specifically, the debate is about what government and HMRC could be doing to stimulate the economy, streamline the system, help small businesses… the list goes on.
It’s also a subject where we have an abundance of expertise, not only within the ICAS tax team but across our membership. So, in this issue we’re giving the floor to a handful of CAs to find out what they would change about our current tax system.
The views expressed are purely those of individual CAs, not of their employers or clients, nor of ICAS, and they make for a fascinating read.
Taxation is one of the subjects that is encompassed within our new Accounting and Business Professional designation, which ICAS launched last month.
This issue explains what it is, how you get it, where it sits in relation to the CA qualification and what the benefits are, for both potential learners and employers alike, some of whom may already have CAs on their payroll.
Recently, 776 students celebrated becoming qualified CAs at our annual Admission Ceremony. We are sure they will go on to forge successful careers both here and overseas. In this issue we speak to two CAs who work for two of the world’s most famous tech-based brands – Netflix and Uber.
Our new crop of CAs will also use the qualification as a platform for making a positive change. Again, we have a fine example in this issue with Robbie Young CA, who first joined the board of a charity aged just 25 and is now part of the ICAS Charities Panel.
Later this month ICAS holds its annual AGM, where we will announce our new line-up of office bearers. In her final column as President, Karen Scholes CA reflects on what proved to a remarkable year in the post. Karen also highlights a major new report on Generative AI and Professional Judgement in Accounting, which was published as part of ICAS’ Shaping the Profession programme. I’m sure I speak for everyone at ICAS in thanking her for the fabulous job she has done.
